06/03/20238 Curious places in Bangkok recommended by Padthaiwok... and that don't appear in the guidebooks!
We invite you to discover some of the most curious corners of the bustling and extensive Thailands capital, Bangkok.
The city offers a multitude of tourist visits, the typical ones that you can find in the tourist information corner of any hotel reception or in a travel guide.
Originally confined to floating markets in the 16th century, it can still be seen in the many canals that run through the heart of the City of Angels.
An open-air art gallery: Street Art
Street art is one of the hallmarks of this city of contrasts. The number of street art murals in Bangkok has grown and is becoming increasingly popular. Many people flock to these spots to take curious selfies, but it's still unknown to the masses. Here are some key locations.
- Chaloemla Gardens (and surrounding streets).
Just a stone's throw from the MBK shopping centre, this park is full of murals and graffiti, including some big-name ones like Alex Face.
Talat Noi neighbourhood
This location should be on your list of things to do in Bangkok. The street art scene, can be found along Trok San Chao Rong Kueak alley.
Charoen Krung Road
It has become one of Bangkok's hipster areas. Lose yourself in its streets where you will find curious bars. It is an area in continuous transformation. It will always surprise you!
Sathorn Street Art Exhibition
It is an exhibition of the renowned Thai artists French Jace and Alex Face.
Thais always connect their markets either by land or water, but no market in Thailand can compete with Mae Klong's daily balance of risk and surrealism. It's about an hour's drive from the city, but it's definitely worth the journey. Also known as 'the umbrella market', produce spills out onto the railway track that runs through the entire market to the surprise of its neophyte visitors and daily custom for the stall vendors. The products, food and visitors removed to make way for a long train, and once it passes, everything picks up where we left off with incredible speed. It is a scene of supernatural balance that reaches its climax eight times a day, crazy!
Tattoo your Bangkok experience
You can turn your visit to Bangkok into something unforgettable... and indelible; well, there are solutions for almost everything... The tradition of tattooing in Thailand is ancient and there is a very revered festival where monks tattoo themselves on their backs in a traditional and quite painful way. We won't go there, but you will find real tattoo artists in Bangkok. You can go to Sukhumvit Road, where you'll find many tattoo studios. Just be careful if they recommend a phrase to get a Thai tattoo, be sure you check what it means first...

Wang Saen Suk Hell Garden, a trip to Buddha's hell
If you dare a rather hair-raising visit, you must go to hell!!!! On the outskirts of Bangkok, in the direction of Pattaya, you will find a park dedicated to representing the Buddha's hell, also known as the Wang Saen Suk Hell Garden. This space requires an awareness of what you may experience on your visit. For some people it is fun and for others terrifying, but what is clear is that it leaves no one indifferent. Visitors will find life-size statues attacked by various things, including vultures, with the blood and guts of those who have been sent to hell to pay for their sins. Although the park is off the tourist trail, it is well worth a visit.
Wat Sam Phran
Wat Sam Phran is not just a 17-storey pink tower surrounded by a huge dragon poking its head out of the top, but a complex with temples, meditation area, living quarters and food stalls. The temple is a mixtur of Chinese and Thai beliefs brought by local monks. Access to the tower rooftop, is gained by climbing the dragon that embraces it. The religious guardians insist on prayers to venerate the dragon whose paws is a coffin where its exabad is said to have spent 38 days inside without a beating heart, only to awaken. The temple is located in Amphoe Sam Phran in Nakhon Pathom province, 40km west of central Bangkok by road.
Sathorn Unique Tower, the Phantom Tower
Begun in the 1990s, when Asia was booming, the 49-storey tower, officially called the Sathorn Unique building, was built as flats, but in 1997 a deep crisis broke out in the country. The developers abandoned the project and now an empty, gloomy tower rises over the city. Most locals stay away from the site because several dead bodies have been found there, among other reasons. It is said to stand on an old cemetery, which adds to its frightening image and its new name of 'Ghost Tower'. At least it deserves a selfie from a distance...
An aircraft graveyard in the city?
Actually, it's a couple of planes that have been abandoned on a plot of land in Ramkhamhaeng, located in the east of Bangkok. But it is highly unusual to see a pair of airframes in the middle of a city. Of course they are already suitably illustrated with graffiti. Those who wish to visit this strange place can only do so by paying an entrance fee to the families living there, who have a home thanks to the abandoned planes.
Chang Chui Market
As things have turned to aeroplanes, a new scene has opened in Bangkok where the protagonist is an old plane (a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar) used as a restaurant inside a fashion and art market with numerous cafes, restaurants and all kinds of shops with different themes. The market is open from the morning during the 'Green Zone' during which no alcohol served until 21.00 hours. But its splendour comes with the night shift from 16.00 to 23.00 hours, making it the perfect place to end a day full of 'Bangkokian' emotions and to end the night in this curious market.
